<p>KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): <a href="/en/taliban" class="glossify-link">Taliban</a>, an indigenous method of irrigation, system using landmines in Khorabak district of southern Kandahar province on Saturday.</p>
<p>Khorabak district chief Abdul Nafey Barish told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident took place in Panj Pai area at around 4am today.</p>
<p>He said the water tunnel was the only irrigation facility in the district and irrigated hundreds of acres of fields and gardens.</p>
<p>He said the destruction of the karez had created serious problems for local residents of three villages who were forced to drink unhealthy water.</p>
<p>The district chief said other karez tunnels and natural streams had dried up in the district and the last one was destroyed by the Taliban. “This only karez had a vital and critical value for people.”</p>
<p>Kandahar police spokesman Ahmad Zia Durrani alleged those who dynamited the karez system in Shorabak had come from across the <a href="/en/durand-line" class="glossify-link">Durand Line</a>.</p>
<p>He said after the incident, the Afghan National Police (ANP) and Afghan Border Police (ABP) reached the area and launched an operation, inflicting heavy casualties on insurgents. However, the exact number wasn’t known.</p>
<p>Khorabak district is 230 kilometres south of Kandahar city near the Durand Line and faces water scarcity.</p>
