NATO FMs to discuss Afghan peace, reforms & Geneva Conference

KABUL (Pajhwok): ): Next week NATO Foreign Ministers will meet in Brussels to discuss a range of issues, including the security situation in Afghanistan, the peace process and the Geneva conference, the alliance said on Sunday.

The foreign ministers will meet on 4-5 December 2018 – to discuss a wide range of security challenges, including Russia’s destabilizing behavior, violent extremism and Middle East and North Africa, and the situation in Afghanistan told Pajhwok Afghan in Brussels.

“The meeting on Afghanistan will be held on the 5th of December, in a format that will include all NATO Allies, all nations contributing to the NATO-led Resolute Support (RS) mission to train, advice and assist the Afghan security forces and institutions, the Afghan Minister of Foreign Affairs, the NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, and the Commander of the Resolute Support mission”, a NATO official said. “Representatives from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, the United Nations, the European Union and the World Bank have also been invited to attend the meeting on Afghanistan,” he added.

“At their meeting, we expect Foreign Ministers to reaffirm the decisions taken at our Summit in July 2018 on our continued support to Afghanistan, through our Resolute Support mission and our commitment to continue supporting the financial sustainment of the Afghan security forces through 2024,” the official pointed out.

NATO and allies to recall Afghanistan’s commitment to continue on the path to reform, including the promotion of human rights, good governance, and combat corruption.

“We also expect Ministers to reiterate our support to an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation process and to exchange views with their Afghan counterpart in this regard, following the recently held Geneva Conference on Afghanistan,” the NATO official said.
