Assault on political office in Kabul widely denounced

<p><a href="/en/afganistan/kabul" class="glossify-link">KABUL</a>’s Green Trend party in Kabul.</p>

<p>At least 20 people were killed and 50others wounded when the office of vice presidential candidate Amrullah Saleh came under attack.</p>

<p>In a tweet today, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) condemned the deadly assault and called candidates civilians.</p>

<p>“Violence has no place in Afghanistan’s presidential campaign," the UN mission said. Electioneering for the ballot, scheduled for September 28, began yesterday.</p>

<p>US special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said: “The attack on Saleh’s political party office was grotesque and a clear act of terrorism.”</p>

<p>Khalilzad wrote in his tweet: “We condemn it in the strongest terms. The perpetrators should be brought to justice. We stand with Afghanistan in the fight against terror.”</p>

<p>US Ambassador to Afghanistan John Bass also condemned Sunday attack.</p>

<p>He tweeted: “I strongly condemn Sunday’s attack on candidate and his supporters. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those wounded and the families of those killed in the attack. Great work by <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Afghan?src=hashtag_click">#Afghan</a> security forces to prevent greater loss of life.”</p>

<p>“Attacks on candidates and campaign events are attacks on <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Afghan?src=hashtag_click">#Afghan</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/democracy?src=hashtag_click">#democracy</a>. The US and the international community remain committed to helping Afghan institutions prepare for elections,” he said.</p>

<p>While strongly condemning the terrorist attack, India expressed its deepest condolences with the families of the deceased.</p>

<p>It said the dastardly attack was aimed at undermining the constitutional and democratic processes and institutions in Afghanistan.</p>

<p>“India stands in solidarity with the government and the people of Afghanistan in their efforts to achieve enduring peace, security and stability,” it added.</p>

<p><a href="/en/pakistan" class="glossify-link">Pakistan</a> also denounced the assault as horrific, saying it condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.</p>

<p>“Pakistan fully supports the democratic process in Afghanistan. We stand with our Afghan brothers and sisters in their efforts to restore complete peace.”</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the British embassy in Kabul extended condolences to the families of those killed and injured in the attack.</p>

<p>“We condemn all attacks on parties and candidates. They are attacks on the electoral process and people’s right to have their say in the future of their country.”</p>
