KABUL and Iran have signed a document on comprehensive cooperation in different fields, The Tehran Times reported on Monday.
Foreign Minister Hanif Atmar, currently on a visit to the neighbouring country, and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif inked the document in Tehran on Sunday.
Atmar is heading a high-level delegation, including political figures, economic experts and security bosses, to Tehran for talks on bilateral issues.
At their meeting, Zarif and Atmar conferred on the latest developments in relations and political, economic, security and cultural cooperation, as well as issues related to Afghan refugees in Iran.
The two sides agreed on finalising the comprehensive cooperation document in three months, according to IRNA -- the state-controlled news agency.
Atmar also held talks with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretary Ali Shamkhani. They hoped the signing of the document on cooperation would help boost bilateral relations.
Shamkhani said the Iranians had hosted Afghan refugees for 40 years and would continue supporting them.
The visiting foreign minister commended Iran’s support for Afghan refugees and said that Kabul would not allow a third country to undermine its relations with Iran.
In late May, about 50 Afghan migrants were allegedly tortured before being thrown into Harirud River by Iranian border guards.
However, the Iranian government and border officials have rejected the claim as false, insisting the incident had happened on the Afghan side of the river.
The Afghan delegation will discuss and follow up on the agreement reached between the foreign ministers within eight committees today and tomorrow.
