Pakistani premier invites Abdullah for talks

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Prime Minister Imran Khan has invited the High Council for National Reconciliation chairman to pave the ground for the early launch of intra-Afghan negotiations.

In a phone call with Dr Abdullah Abdullah on Wednesday, Khan invited him to visit Pakistan at the earliest to share perspectives on advancing the Afghan peace process.

Islamabad hoped for the commencement of intra-Afghan talks at the earliest possible, the prime minister said in a statement from his office a day after his foreign minister met a delegation from Taliban’s political office in Qatar.

Khan called for Afghan leaders to seize the historic opportunity for achieving an inclusive political settlement to four decades of conflict in their country.

After the call, Dr. Abdullah tweeted they emphasised the importance of the unique opportunity to reduce violence, start peace parleys and pursue the path to a dignified and durable peace.

The Afghan peace chief accepted the invitation from Khan, Abdullah promised he would visit Pakistan in near future in an effort to ensure the start to the intra-Afghan dialogue.

During the telephone conversation, Khan expressed the desire to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries. He believed there was no military solution to the Afghanistan problem.

Both sides agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations and take forward the Afghanistan peace process, the Prime Minister House in Islamabad said.

On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi met a Taliban delegation led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, at the Foreign Office.
