189 died, 172 injured in recent floods: State Ministry

KABUL (Pajhwok): The State Ministry for Natural Disasters Management says recent floods in nine provinces killed 189 people and injured 172 others and completely or partially destroyed around 4,000 houses.

Ghulam Bahauddin Jilani, State Minister for Disasters Management, told a press conference that the severe floods from Aug 25 to September 1 caused casualties as well as financial losses to people.

The floods hit hard Parwan, Kabul, Kapisa, Maidan Wardak, Panjshir, Nangarhar, Paktika, Nuristan, Laghman, Khost, Kunar, Bamyan and Ghazni provinces.

The minister said the flooding completely destroyed 1055 houses and partially damaged another 2960 in these provinces.

In the worst-hit province Parwan, 141 people were killed, 128 injured, 383 houses completely destroyed and 532 houses partially destroyed.

The floods continued in Kapisa where 39 people were killed and wounded, in Kabul 20 people were killed and wounded, in Maidan Wardak 12 died or wounded, in Panjshir six people were killed and wounded, in Nangarhar five people were killed or wounded and in Logar four people suffered casualties.

Ghulam Bahauddin Jilani said two people died in floods in Paktika and Paktia provinces, adding that floods were also reported in Nuristan, Laghman, Khost, Kunar, Bamyan and Ghazni provinces. There were no immediate reports of injuries or severe damage.

Based on his information, cash, food and non-food items have been distributed to 3012 families by national and international organizations through the Provincial Committee for Disaster Management.

Each affected family received 50000 afghanis cash and necessary materials.”Rescue and search operations are still ongoing in Parwan, especially by the Ministry of Defense which is a member of the commission. Twelve to fifteen people have been missing since the floods emerged.

He added survey teams were working and would soon publish statistics of the displaced persons as well.
