KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani and High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR) chairman Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday agreed the Afghan government would continue the next phases of peace negotiations.

A statement from the Presidential Palace received by Pajhwok Afghan News said that Ghani and Abdullah met at the palace this morning.

During the meeting, also attended by National Security Advisor (NSA) Hamdullah Mohib, Abdullah shared the report of the second meeting of the Leadership Committee of HCNR.

The meeting also discussed the venue and time for future phases of peace negotiations between the government and Taliban delegations, the statement added.

The HCNR came into being about seven months ago, but the first meeting of its leadership committee was held on November 26, and its second conference was held Saturday.

The intra-Afghan negotiations are scheduled to resume on January 5.

After 80 days of discussions between the Taliban and government representatives in Qatar, the two sides were able to agree only on the procedural rules for peace talks.

The negotiating teams rose for a three-week recess on December 12.
