KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani and High Council for National Reconciliation Council (HCNR) Chairman D. Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday exchanged views on the second round of peace negotiations.

Ghani and Abdullah also discussed the second meeting of the Leadership Committee and issues pertaining to the venue and schedule of the next round of peace talks, the Presidential Palace said.

After the meeting, which was also attended by National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib, Abdullah tweeted the HCNR Leadership Committee had decided on a set of guidelines for the next round of peace talks.

He wrote they had decided on choosing Doha to host the second round of the peace negotiations. The committee hailed support from the international community, including Qatar.

Days after agreeing on procedural rules for the peace parleys, government and Taliban negotiators took a three-week break to consult their leaders on the agenda.

On Saturday, Abdullah said during the second meeting of the peace council that the peace negotiations would resume on January 5, 2021. The venue for the talks should not be an obstacle, he added.

“We and the people of Afghanistan are supporting the Islamic Republic’s negotiating team. We are looking forward to positive outcomes in the second phase,” he remarked.
