Uruzgan court sentences 2 men to 25, 17 years in prison

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): The appellant court of central Uruzgan province on Monday sentenced a National Directorate of Security (NDS) officer to 25 years in prison and a Taliban insurgent to 17 years during two open hearings.

The hearings were chaired by chief justice of the province Attaullah Atta and attended by prosecutors, lawyers and accused individuals.

Rahmatullah, a National Directorate of Security (NDS) officer, had shot dead two individuals and wounded two others after a verbal clash with Afghan Air Force personnel during a meeting in Uruzgan’s Chinarto district over his transfer to Tirinkot.

The first court had sentenced him to 25 years in prison for the killing and two-and-half years for injuring of three others.

Attaullah said the second man (a Taliban insurgent), Musa Kaleem, had been arrested red-handed in Tirinkot with several landmines and was sentenced to 17 years in prison in the first instance.

The chief justice added the two convicts moved the appellant court against their sentences and the court upheld the verdicts of the first court after hearing views of the parties.

Rahmatullah was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for the killing of two people and two and a half years for injuring three others and Musa Kaleem was sentenced to 17 years imprisonment for anti-government activities.

Atta, however, said the verdicts were not final and the convicted individuals could challenge them in an upper court.
