Jawzjan activists call for permanent ceasefire

SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Civil society activists in northern Jawzjan province on Tuesday expressed concern over rising insecurity and called on the government and the Taliban to declare a lasting ceasefire.

Hamidullah Masroor, a civil society activist, said that talks and discussions on peace have been ongoing for the last two years, but their outcome was unknown.

He said  no one knew the fate of the talks but the war was intensifying every day and its scope is widening.

Masroor stated that the explosion in front of the Sayyid al-Shuhada school in Kabul was clear message from the war mongers.

He called on both sides to seek positive options for ending the war and fratricide in the country.

“I wish they had announced a permanent ceasefire, which would double the people's happiness during Eid.”

Abdul Sabur Khadem, another civil society activist said, peace remained an unresolved issue in the country and the scope of insecurity was widening.

Khadim said the two sides searched for peace in Qatar but they did not find it. “We also went to Moscow, but we returned empty-handed. The last place is Turkey where both sides must fully avail the opportunity to achieve peace and end the war”.

On May 8, 85 people were killed and 147 were injured when a bomb planted in a car and two landmines exploded near the Seyyed al-Shohada girls' school in Kabul.

At least 24 people were killed and more than 110 were injured when a car bomb exploded in Logar province in this month.

The victims of the two incidents were civilians and the majority of them were students.

The Afghan government declared "national mourning" on Tuesday, May 11, in honor of the victims of female students in Kabul and the attack on students in Logar. The national flags were flown at half-mast inside and outside of the country.
