MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Thousands of residents of northwestern Faryab province on Monday protested against the appointment of DawoodLaghmani as new governor of the province.
The protesters chanting “death to dealers” said they did not want Laghmani as their governor and demanded the governor should be a qualified individual from their own province.
Pajhwok Afghan News’ reporter said all shops in Maimana city were closed today.
The protest came after Marshal AbdulRashid Dostum on Sunday evening called on his supporters to use all their resources such as weapons and knives to prevent the entry of Dawood Laghmani to the governor’s office.
Marshal Dostum claimed that the president has appointed Dawood Laghmani as governor in Faryab province in order to surrender the province to the Taliban.
Dostum warned that he would not let the system, preserved with blood of thousands of Afghans, collapse into the Taliban’s hands.
The protesters on Monday warned that they would not let the new governor enter the province.
Ata Mohammad Faizi, chairman of Junbish council, Ehsanullah Qawanch, chairman of Junbish youth organization and Khairullah Sufizada in their speeches, said they supported the system, democracy and Afghan Security Forces but they would not succumb to President Ashraf Ghani’s selfishness.
Two days ago, the protesters did not allow DawoodLaghmani’s plane to land in Faryab but Laghmani on Sunday morning returned to Faryab and is now staying at the Afghan National Army’s first brigade headquarters.
