Pakistan: Violence may lead to Durand Line closure

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan has underlined the imperative of peace in Afghanistan, saying it will benefit a lot from stability in the neighbouring country.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry said: “Pakistan urges the Taliban to hold talks with the US and the Afghan government.”

Chaudhry told journalists in Islamabad on Saturday that Pakistan had fenced 90 percent of the Durand Line, a project vehemently opposed by Afghanistan.

He also referred to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s interview, in which he spoke on a wide range of issues, including the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan.

The minister said Khan shared his views on relations with the US, China and Afghanistan and hoped for better ties with arch-rival India.

Khan believed if the situation in Afghanistan deteriorated, Pakistan could mull over the option of sealing the Durand Line, Chaudhry said.

“We are in a position to completely seal the Durand Line with Afghanistan,” the minister asserted, calling for the warring factions to be part of solution to the Afghanistan problem.

Over the past few months, there has been a sharp spike in violence across Afghanistan, with the Taliban overrunning several districts.

Chaudhry promised Pakistan would continue to play a proactive role in promoting an amicable and negotiated settlement to the conflict.
