KABUL (Pajhwok): New Delhi has withdrawn dozens of diplomats and security personnel from the Indian consulate in southern Kandahar province.
The Telegraph reported on Sunday that about 50 staffers of the consulate were pulled out due to the worsening security environment in the country.
The consulate staffers were flown home from Kandahar on a special Indian Air Force plane a day earlier, other Indian media outlets said.
With foreign troops leaving the war-torn country at a good clip, India also plans to evacuate a group of Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel from Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the External Affairs Ministry in New Delhi the Indian Consulate in Kandahar had not been closed. It explained only Indian staff had returned home.
“This is a temporary measure and the consulate continues to operate through its local staff, a statement from the ministry said.
The statement added: “As an important partner, India remains committed to a peaceful, sovereign and democratic Afghanistan.”
