Iran agrees to supply 100MW more electricity to Afghanistan

KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran has agreed to supply another 100 megawatts of electricity to Afghanistan and is also ready to invest in wind power generation in Afghanistan.

HekmatullahNaoorzai, a spokesman for Da Afghanistan BreshnaShirkat (DABS), told Pajhwok that a delegation of the power utility led by the action Minister of Water and Energy had traveled to Iran last week.

According to him, the Iranian side agreed with the delegation to supply 100 megawatts of electricity to Afghanistan for five years.

Without elaborating, he said Iranian officials had said they were investing in wind power in Afghanistan.

According to Noorzai, Iranian officials have said that until the banking system in Afghanistan returns to normal, they will not ask for electricity loans from Afghanistan and that some of DABS employees would have the opportunity to study in Iran.

He did not say how much Afghanistan owed to Iran.

According to reports, Afghanistan needs 850 megawatts of electricity annually, of which 620 megawatts are purchased from neighboring countries (Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan) and about 230 megawatts are produced from domestic sources.
