FIROZKOH (Pajhwok): A number of families who have been displaced as a result of political changes and drought in western Ghor province say they have nothing to eat and to keep themselves warm in the cold winter.

Mohammad Amin, 36, a displaced man from the Allah Yar area of the province, said he and his family were displaced to Firozkoh city, the capital of Ghor, around six months ago due to conflicts and drought in their area.

“There were intense fights in our area, we were forced to leave all our belongings behind and take our family and children here, but here no one cares about us and we have nothing for eating or to heat our home, the winter has approached and we have a lot of problems,” he said.

GhulamSarwar is another IDP from Dawlatyar district of Ghor who came to the capital of the province due to drought and currently lives in a ruined house. He said he did not collect any crops from his farmland due to severe drought in their area.

“We are a family of eight people; I am the only breadwinner in my family. Our farms did not yield any crops this year due to drought… we were obliged to move to the city so if we get some help, but no one cares about us here, we are in need of help,” he said.

GhulamSarwar and Abdul Hakim are not the only displaced people living in difficult conditions, but thousands of other families live in similar situation.

On the other hand, officials of the Department of Refugees and Repatriation of Ghor province say that they had received help requests from more than 2,000 families since taking over the province.

Eng.MirahmadMusamam, Ghor refugees and repatriation director, said they in cooperation with some organizations had assisted a number of these families.

“Since the victory of the Islamic Emirate, more than 2,000 families have so far submitted their requests, and the requests are increasing every day, these people are displaced from their areas due to conflicts and drought,” he said.

He added that the situation of displaced families in the province was worrisome and they were in serious need of assistance.

“The current aid flow to the province is very little and there is a possibility of humanitarian catastrophe if the families in need are not helped before the cold winter and snowfalls”, he said.

He added that all IDPs in the province were in serious economic situation and aid organizations also did not provide any help or they had no interest in providing assistance in the province.

UNHCR recently began distributing cash to more than 5,000 families in western Afghanistan, more than 1,000 of whom were displaced in Ghor province.
