PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Greater acceptance of the Taliban government will pave the ground for its representation at the United Nations, Pakistan believes.
Earlier in the week, the UN Credentials Committee deferred its decision on allowing the Taliban to represent Afghanistan at the world body.
Pakistan Ambassador Munir Akram said: “Under the circumstances, the decision to defer consideration of the credentials was expected.”
Dawn quoted him as saying: “Once there is a wider consensus on official acceptance of the new Afghan government, its credentials will be accepted.”
In September, the Taliban urged the UN to allow their nominee Suhail Shaheen to speak at the 76th session of the General Assembly.
But the Taliban’s request was not considered as the Credential Committee could not meet before the end of that session.
Commenting on the panel’s decision, Shaheen said it was unfair. He called on the world body to reconsider the decision.
On Thursday, he tweeted: “This decision is not based on legal rules and justice because they have deprived the people of Afghanistan of their legitimate right.”
“We hope this right is handed over to the representative of the government of Afghanistan in the near future so that we can be in a position to resolve issues of the people effectively … and maintain positive interaction with the world.”
