PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): With Pakistan falling into a constitutional crisis, the Cabinet Division says Imran Khan no longer holds the Office of the prime minister.
The Cabinet Division issued a notification regarding Khan’s status hours after the dissolution of the National Assembly by President Arif Alvi on Sunday.
The notification reads: “Consequent upon the dissolution of the National Assembly by the president in terms of Article 58(1), read with Article 48(1) of the Constitution, vide Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs’ SRO No. 487(1)/2022, dated 3rd April, 2022, Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi ceased to hold the Office of the prime minister, with immediate effect.”
Despite his de-notification, Khan can remain in office for a fortnight till the appointment of a caretaker prime minister under Article 224.
However, there is no clarity on how a caretaker premier will be appointed as the National Assembly (lower house) stands dissolved.
Additionally, the people who appoint the interim premier, the opposition leader in the National Assembly and the prime minister, are no longer in office.
Even if Khan can stay in office for 15 days, he will not be empowered to take decisions that an elected head of government makes.
