KABUL (Pajhwok): Some medical practitioners have advised people against the random use of antibiotic medicines because it was harmful and bring down the natural resistance of the human body.
They said that antibiotic were effective against bacteria and were unable to treat viruses such as Covid-19.
Dr. Faridullah Umari, trainer and a specialist in Kabul’s Antani Hospital, said antibiotics eradicated bacteria or decline their growth and they are used to treat bacterial diseases.
He, however, stressed over the limited use of antibiotic medicines and added some people were randomly taken antibiotic which was dangerous.
He said some doctors unprofessionally behaved and prescribed antibiotics for every patient without considering its negative impact on the patient.
The source said: “In addition to bacteria, antibiotics also have an effect on some parasites, but the antibiotic itself has no effect on the corona virus; Not only the corona virus, but it has no effect on any other virus, by using antibiotics, the patient’s immunity is more likely to go down,” he said.
He urged people to strop random use of antibiotics and in case of any health issue they shall refer to the doctors.
Dr. Hashmatullah Faizi, a trainer and quality control director in Afghan Japan Hospital, said: “if necessary, we give antibiotics to the patient, but the person’s body shows resistance to this drug, and the same microbe that should be destroyed by the antibiotic is not destroyed.”
Dr. Mohammad Hashim Wahaj, acknowledged the comments of the two specialists regarding the random use of antibiotics, and said that antibiotic not only bring the resistance of the body down but it has no impact on Covid-19.
He stressed over the limited use of antibiotics and added: “In Afghanistan, antibiotics are randomly used and this should not happen.”
“Antimicrobial spices only work against bacterial infections; Inappropriate use of antimicrobials increases the risk of resistance to them, putting everyone at risk for mild infections,” he added.
This comes that a new WHO study on antimicrobial resistance revealed very high levels of resistance in common bacteria frequently causing bloodstream infections in hospitals. Infection prevention & control is critical to stop the spread and saving lives.
