KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghan embassy in Islamabad says 524 undocumented Afghan nationals have been released from prisons in Pakistan’s Karachi city after their indefatigable efforts.
The Afghan mission tweeted that with efforts of the Afghan consulate in Karachi, 524 Afghan nationals were released from jail, including 54 women and 97 children and they would be sent back to Afghanistan.
The embassy said all expenses of the released prisoners such as food, clothing and transportation costs were paid by the embassy and consulate in accordance with the instructions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan.
Three months ago, the embassy said as a result of its efforts, 334 Afghans were released from jail in Karachi after they had been detained for staying illegally in the city.
Last week, the Associated Press quoted Pakistani police and officials as saying that 1,200 Afghan refugees, including women and children, were imprisoned in the country’s prisons.
Earlier, the Afghan mission in Islamabad had tweeted: “Despite promises of Pakistani institutions and officials with the Afghan Embassy and the consulate, Afghan nationals, including women and children, have not been released from prisons, especially in Sindh.”
It had said imprisoning and torturing Afghans living and traveling in Pakistan, especially women, children, and patients, was very painful.
