Khost students want war-ruined schools reconstructed

KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): A number of students in southeastern Khost province urge the government to reconstruct school buildings destroyed in the past conflict.

A middle school in Zanikhel area (Palosi) of Nader Shah Walikot district is one of the schools that has been destroyed and lies in ruins.

Hssanullah, a student of the Palosi school, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “You can see the school is blown up with bombs, it has no gate, no windows and in worst condition.”

Zarmanullah, a student of 6^th grade in the school, told Pajhwok their school remained closed on rainy and windy days because the school had big holes in its roofs and walls.

He urged the government, especially the education department, to reconstruct the school building.

He said: “Our school is in worst condition; it was blown up long time ago and there dust rises in classes during windstorm.”

Kamir Khan, a teacher of the middle school, also told Pajhwok that they could not teach the students properly in such a dilapidated building.

He urged the government to address the problem in the earliest possible.

Some parts of the central school building in Yaqobi Sabri district have been destroyed.

One of the students of this school, Ahmad Khan, told Pajhwok Afghan News that many students attended classes under the open sky because their classrooms had been destroyed by the past war.

He added: “In addition to the education department, we urge domestic and foreign institutions to rebuild the damaged parts of our school because we are facing a host of problems, because we cannot learn during sunny, raining and windy days.”

Students of some other schools also made similar views and urged the government to rebuild the damaged parts of their schools.

Sayed Kabir Sangin, director of education department, told Pajhwok that currently 108 school buildings in the province needed basic reconstruction.

He called wars, earthquakes, floods and poor-quality work reasons behind the destruction of these schools.

“Up to 100 schools in Khost are without buildings, this problem is shared with the authorities. About 108 schools need reconstruction, some of them are in worst condition and some need superficial reconstruction,” he added.
