Takhar seminaries students want girls’ schools reopened

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Some girls in northern Takhar province unable to go to schools for obtaining modern education due to the ban on girls’ education have asked the acting government to reopen schools and universities for girls.

After coming into power the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has banned girls from attending schools above class sixth and universities and said the decision was not permanent and efforts were underway to explore solution to the problem.

Some girls in Takhar province who could not go to school to continue their studies but they go to religious seminaries said their dreams could not turn reality due to ban on girls education beyond class sixth.

Sawita Naikzad, one of the university students, told Pajhwok Afghan News that she wanted to become a teacher. After ban on schools and universities Sawita referred to religious seminaries and started learning religious studies.

She said: “I was the student of literature Faculty’s 3rd semester at Takhar University when women were banned from universities; I referred to one of the religious seminary for study in order to protect myself from psychological and other problems.”

She said during university time she also had interest with religious studies and she was also striving for modern education in order to serve the people in the future.

Wahida Anwari, another university student, said after the closure of universities she referred to a religious seminary for studies.

She told Pajhwok Afghan News: “I had huge dreams and was striving to achieve my dreams, but after the universities closure I was badly disappointed and rendered psychological illness then I decided to refer to a religious seminary for education.”

She termed ban on girls education disappointing but hoped for the resumption of girls education so they could again one day go to school.

Aesha Alizada, the student of class 10th, hoped that she will become doctor in the future and help their people through her profession.

“I was in the 10th grade of school when I was deprived from going to class and meeting my classmates, while I dreamed of becoming a doctor in the future but after the ban on girl education I referred to a religious seminary in order to protect myself from psychological issues, we ask the caretaker government to open the doors of schools for girls.”

Munazah, another girls student, who cannot go to school said: “This is disappointing that our schools are banned and we could not go to school, I decided to join a religious seminary because by staying home I could incurred psychological problems, from the past two years I get religious education and want to ask the government to reopen girls school.”

Maryam Mubarez, a local lady who opened a religious seminary after ban on girls education said when girls are deprived from getting higher education then she decided to establish a religious school where girls could study and get promoted in their life.

She added staying home was difficult for girls so she decided to open a religious seminary named Bibi Maryam.

According to Mubarez currently around 200 girls were busy studying in her institution.

Khiruddin Khirkhawa, a university teacher, said depriving girls and women from education had negative consequences and as a result people become illiterate and ignorant.

He said solution to this problem was laid in introducing a framework according to the Islamic Sharia Law which the acting government should implement and let girls and women get education.

Takhar Education Department Spokesperson Azeemullah Tawhidi, said after political changes in the country 299 new religious seminaries had been established in the country and on average from 200 to 400 students are getting education in these institutions.

He said recently the Education Department allocated more than 1,000 teachers post for these seminaries.
