GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): After a Pajhwok report, the authorities have started reconstructing a collapsed bridge in the Giru district of southern Ghazni province.

Earlier, some residents of Giru district had asked the government to rebuild the bridge washed away by last year’s flashfloods.

The destruction of the bridge has created a whole host of problems for area residents, they say, stressing the link’s reconstruction.

Residents say although the bridge was temporarily rebuilt by locals in a short time, they fear it may collapse as a result of snow and rain.

Mullah Mohibullah Abbas, Ghazni public works director, told Pajhwok Afghan News that after Pajhwok published a report about the matter, an emergency meeting was held between local departments. The meeting was chaired by the governor and a decision was made regarding the bridge.

He added the bridge was destroyed due to the past war, rains and floods, creating problems for commuters.

Before starting the bridge’s reconstruction, they had shared the issue with the central government long ago.

The director said they had started reconstruction of the bridge using local resources. He said Ghazni municipality had also contributed to the reconstruction effort and the bridge would be completed over the next one and a half months.

Abbas thanked Pajhwok for always highlighting people’s problems and drawing government’s attention to them.

Majeed Zarand, a resident of Abdullah Qala area of Giru district, told Pajhwok that the river flowed through Giru, Andar and Qarabagh districts and water from mountains of Ghazni and Sultan and Sardi dams also fell into the river.  He said the people of Giru district faced a lot problems with the increase in water level in the river due to rains.

He said the bridge on the river between Giru and Andar districts connected Giru and some districts of southeastern Paktika province with Ghazni City.
