KABUL (Pajhwok): The leaders of 18 UN agencies and non-profit organisations (NGO) have underlined the need for an immediate ceasefire in the Israeli-Hamas conflict.
Voicing “shock and horror” at the rising death toll from the war, they said. “We need an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. It’s been 30 days. Enough is enough.”
In a joint statement, heads of the agencies, including UN and NGOs heads said: “This must stop now.”
The leaders of UNICEF, UN Women, the World Food Program, the World Health Organisation and Save the Children pleaded for a stop to the hostilities.
The Hamas government says at least 9,770 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in Israel’s relentless bombing blitz ground offensive in Gaza.
The UN and NGO heads said: “For almost a month, the world has been watching the unfolding situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory in shock and horror at the spiraling numbers of lives lost and torn apart.”
The statement urged all parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law.
They also called for the protection of civilian infrastructure such as hospitals and schools and allowing aid into the embattled enclave.
The denial of essential goods and services to the population of Gaza was unacceptable, they said, lamenting well as being they were bombed in their homes, shelters, hospitals and places of worship.
The group also denounced the killing of dozens of aid workers. “More than 100 attacks against health care have been reported.”
“Scores of aid workers have been killed since October 7 including 88 UNRWA colleagues – the highest number of United Nations fatalities ever recorded in a single conflict.”
