KABUL (Pajhwok): The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Afghanistan has pledged the distribution of humanitarian aid to 16 million vulnerable people this winter, according to a statement on Sunday.
The commitment was made by UNOCHA Deputy Head Aqa Mohammad Zaid, during a meeting with the acting State Minister for Disaster Management Mullah Mohammad Abbas Akhund, a statement from the ministry said.
UNOCHA deputy head said that 22.8 million people, accounted for half of the Afghanistan population needed assistance in 2024, adding that for this purpose $2.6 billion were needed.
He said that they held meetings with the people in different parts of Afghanistan and prioritized their needs in four zones and three parts.
He said that UNOCHA will distribute winter assistance that included food, winter garments, blankets, heating materials and health assistance to 16 million people.
According to Zaid the aid will be directed towards vulnerable people and those affected by drought, forced displacement and returnees.
Mullah Abbas Akhund stressed over the need for the permanent shelters construction for Afghans deported from the neighboring countries.
