KABUL (Pajhwok): Top Afghan and Iranian officials have discussed issues of mutual interest, including legal and judicial cooperation.
Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and Iran’s deputy judiciary chief Kazem Gharibabadi discussed the problems of Afghan prisoners in the neighbouring country.
They conferred on the problems of Afghan inmates, implementation of an agreement on prisoners’ transfer and alternative mechanisms for death-row inmates.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said in a statement the two sides also discussed the formation of a joint judicial committee to share judicial experiences and extradite prisoners.
Iran’s special envoy for Afghanistan Hassan Kazemi Qomi was also present at the meeting.
Muttaqi urged the Iranian authorities concerned to meet Afghan inmates, assess their situation and sort out the issues being faced by them.
Gharibabadi, heading a high-level delegation, said: “We are fully aware that the government of Afghanistan is waging a decisive fight against narcotics, which has reduced drug trafficking into Iran. It is an effective step.”
He pledged Iran’s cooperation with the Islamic Emirate in the judicial sector, saying they were serious about resolving the problems of Afghan refugees.
