Afghanistan pays off $627 electricity debt

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan has made $627 million electricity debt payment to all four countries and currently there was no amount payable in terms of electricity charges, an official said on Tuesday.

Hikmatullah Maiwand, spokesperson of the Da Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS) told Pajhwok Afghan News the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) government faced serious financial challenges after the takeover, including economic sanctions, but still it was able to its electricity debt.

He said Afghanistan imported electricity from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Turkmenistan and made $627 million debt payment to these countries in terms of electricity charges.

He said currently Afghanistan had no electricity debt from any country.

This comes that On February 1, Tajikistan Energy and Water Resources Minister Daler Juma informed reporters that Afghanistan had fully paid off its debts for power delivered to date.
