KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan has received approximately 6.7 billion US dollars in humanitarian funding since the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) takeover in August 2021, says the UN.
The absence of war in Afghanistan has facilitated better access and identification of needs in remote areas, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in its latest report.
OCHA emphasised that international efforts have prevented the occurrence of famine in Afghanistan and the number of vulnerable people has decreased.
The report added: “While the situation has stabilised since then, with a significant reduction in conflict-related displacement, and fragile improvements in food insecurity and poverty, Afghanistan remains extremely vulnerable to natural disasters, the effects of climate change and geopolitical dynamics, all of which can generate new needs and exacerbate existing ones in an instant.”
OCHA warned that aid cuts could jeopardise gains and increase food insecurity and poverty in Afghanistan.
Earlier, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) had announced a US contribution of $20.71 billion in aid to Afghanistan since the interim government returned to power in 2021.
