MoAIL purchases, stores 38,000MT of wheat from farmers

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock (MoAIL) has purchased and stored 38,000 metric tons of surplus wheat from farmers, valued at more than one billion afghanis.

The storage process for a portion of this wheat, which was bought from various provinces across the country, was completed today (Sunday) in the presence of ministry officials at the central silo.

According to the ministry, the wheat purchasing process has been finalized, and the transfer of wheat to the silos and warehouses is now 90 percent complete.

Mullah Agha Jan Salim, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, explained that two committees had been formed in each province for the wheat purchasing process—one responsible for pricing and the other for inspection.

Qudratullah Haqyar, an official from the ministry, stated that the wheat was stored to support those affected by emergencies, control wheat prices in the market, and prevent hoarding.

He added that, under the guidance of the leadership of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), the 38,000 metric tons of surplus wheat were purchased from farmers and stored in 11 provinces.

Eng. Zakariya, deputy head of the central silo, emphasized that wheat storage provides economic benefits both for the country and for farmers.

Five months ago, the leader of the IEA issued a decree instructing the caretaker government to purchase surplus wheat from farmers and store it in silos. This measure aims to ensure that wheat can be released to the market in times of emergency, price surges in wheat or flour, or in cases of hoarding.
