HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Dozens of petrol selling shops have been closed by the specific committee on their failure to adhere to safety regulations and an inadequate distance between them and fuel stations.
A committee consisting of representatives from the provincial government, the police command, the Department of Oil and Gas, and the municipality of Herat conducted an inspection of petrol stations in various parts of the city today.
Maulvi Ruzuddin, a representative of the Department of Oil and Gas in Herat, told Pajhwok that a 14-article regulation had previously been distributed to petrol stations, and they had been given a three-month grace period to comply with these regulations.
He added that today, a committee from various government institutions inspected the petrol selling shops across the city, resulting in the closure of 60 such shops for failing to follow safety measures and not maintaining proper distance from fuel tanks.
According to him, the committee has been working for the past 10 months to ensure petrol stations in the city meet established standards.
Meanwhile, Maulvi Abdul Hakim, a member of the committee, said that the majority of the petrol stations in the city still do not comply with the standards, and according to him, the inspection and review process will continue until shortcomings are addressed.
Some residents of Herat welcomed this action by the authorities and called for safety measures to be followed by petrol station owners.
According to the residents, this measure by the government will prevent potential fires.
The regulations of the Department of Oil and Gas in Herat require petrol selling shops to be equipped with safety equipment, maintain a minimum distance of 250 meters from fuel tanks, keep a proper distance from other petrol stations, and prohibit the operation of petrol stations in residential buildings. These are among the provisions of the 14-article regulation for petrol stations in Herat.
