HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): As many as 196 beggars have been rounded up from the capital and districts of western Herat province, an official announced on Sunday.
Maulvi Hayatullah Rohani, Counter-Narcotics Department director at the police headquarters, said about 196 beggars, including orphaned children, have been identified and collected during an ongoing drive. Their situations have been assessed to provide necessary assistance.
He added that orphaned children in need would be referred to orphanages, while children who do not require financial support would be introduced to the vocational training department of the Directorate of Labour and Social Affairs to learn job skills.
Rohani clarified that essential aid for needy beggars would be distributed by the Departments of Economy, Justice, and the Red Crescent.
The Counter-Narcotics Department announced that the total number of beggars collected in Herat so far has reached 1,071, and several rounds of assistance have been distributed to those in need.
The drive to round up beggars from Herat city, the provincial capital, kicked off last year to reduce social harm and support vulnerable segments of society. The process is still ongoing.
