MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): A new health centre has been constructed at a cost of 17 million afghanis in the Badpakh district of eastern Laghman province, an official announced on Wednesday.
Governor Sheikh Sher Ahmad Haqqani told Pajhwok Afghan News the health centre was established in response to repeated requests from the local community.
Funded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the facility officially was put into service on Tuesday, said the refugee and repatriation director.
Maulvi Ghulam Rahman Bilal added the health centre had been constructed on 2.5 acres of land, equipped with all necessary facilities.
Meanwhile, residents of the district voiced satisfaction with the construction of the centre.
Sultan Mohammad Sadat, an inhabitant of the district, recalled previously, they only had a small health centre operating in a private home, which could not meet community needs.
Another resident, Abdullah, said in the past, they had to travel three hours in a car to reach the provincial hospital in Mehtarlam.
According to the Public Health Department, the newly-established centre will provide healthcare services to approximately 30,000 people.
