JALALABAD (Pajhwok): At least 70 prisoners have been released from the central prison in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Wednesday.
Maulvi Suhail Saeed, head of prison affairs, told Pajhwok Afghan News the inmates were freed in compliance with a decision of the Supreme Court.
The prisoners, who had been convicted of various offences, were granted reductions in their sentences and subsequently released.
Saeed emphasised the inmates had received religious, modern and vocational education. He hoped they would make positive use of the skills gained.
He added such pardons were granted to individuals who showed remorse and demonstrated signs of reform.
In addition to good living conditions, the beneficiaries acknowledged, they were provided with opportunities for education during their time in prison.
Rahmat Wali, one of the released inmates, expressed gratitude for the treatment he received from prison authorities and hailed the Supreme Court for reducing his sentence.
A few days ago, 123 prisoners had been eleased from Nangarhar prison under a special order from the leadership of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
