Ghalibaf says mistrust remains unresolved in Iran–US talks

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Speaker of Iran’s parliament and head of the Iranian negotiating team in Islamabad has said that talks with the United States have not resolved mutual mistrust, although both sides have gained a more realistic understanding of each other.

Negotiations between Iran and the United States, hosted in Islamabad, ended without results last Sunday after 21 hours of discussions.

According to Tasnim News Agency, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said in a televised interview: “The Islamabad talks did not resolve our mistrust; however, I think both sides now have a more realistic understanding of each other.”

He added that efforts were made to include different political views within the Iranian delegation and that there was no factional or political approach in its composition.

Ghalibaf noted that up to 48 hours before the talks began in Islamabad, there had been no direct contact with the US side, and that communications were only conducted through mediators.

He said that if the United States does not lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports, movement in the Strait of Hormuz would certainly be restricted, adding that there was no doubt about this position.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister wrote on X on Friday that following the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon, the Strait of Hormuz had been reopened to all vessels.

A day earlier, the spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbia Central Headquarters announced that, due to US violations of commitments, the Strait of Hormuz had been closed again and the strategic waterway was under the strict control of Iranian armed forces.
