2 killed, several injured after car rams crowd in Germany

KABUL (Pajhwok): Two people have been killed and 22 others injured after a car drove into a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig, according to media reports.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon when a vehicle struck pedestrians in the central Grimmaische Straße area before continuing toward the market, authorities said. The driver later fled the scene but was subsequently arrested.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung said the suspect, a 33-year-old German citizen, was in custody, adding that the motive remained unclear, the BBC reported.

Police confirmed that 22 people were injured in the incident, including three seriously.

Michael Kretschmer, the head of the state of Saxony, of which Leipzig is part, said the suspect had previously suffered from mental illness.

Police spokesperson Susanne Luebcke said the incident took place at around 17:35 (15:35 GMT), when “a person drove a vehicle across Augustusplatz into Grimmaische Street, continuing past the market.”

“Several people were injured in the incident. Unfortunately, we also have to report two fatalities,” she added.

The Leipzig public prosecutor’s office confirmed the victims were a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, both German citizens.
