Trump announces 3-day Russia-Ukraine ceasefire

KABUL (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled to run from May 9 to May 11.

In a post on Truth Social on Friday, Trump said the truce would begin on Saturday and continue through Monday, Al Jazeera reported.

“I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE-DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the war between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote.

Shortly afterward, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on X that a temporary three-day truce had been arranged as part of US-led efforts to negotiate an end to the more than four-year-long conflict.

Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov later said that “an agreement on this matter was reached during our telephone contacts with the US administration. In turn, US representatives were in contact with Kyiv.”

He added that the agreement followed a recent phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump, during which the two leaders “emphasised that our countries were allies during World War II and also discussed the possibility of a ceasefire during the Victory Day celebrations.”

Russia had previously announced a two-day unilateral ceasefire to mark its May 9 World War II Victory Day commemorations. Ukraine had earlier said it had also proposed a truce, but claimed Moscow ignored the offer.

“This request was made directly by me,” Trump said on Friday, while thanking both the Russian and Ukrainian leaders for agreeing to the ceasefire.
