KABUL (Pajhwok): At least nine people were killed and more than 60 others injured in Russian air strikes targeting major Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, Dnipro and Kharkiv, on Tuesday, according to media reports.
Russia has continued to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and power supply networks, while Ukraine has intensified attacks on Russian oil facilities this year.
The conflict, now in its fifth year, has caused casualties on both sides, although both Moscow and Kyiv deny deliberately targeting civilians, Al Jazeera reported.
Five people were killed and 25 others wounded in a Russian missile and drone attack on the southeastern city of Dnipro, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said in a post on Telegram.
All of the injured were hospitalized and were reported to be in moderate condition. Hanzha also shared images showing destroyed residential buildings, burned-out vehicles, and a damaged children’s playground.
In the capital, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least four people were killed and 51 others injured, including children.
A suspected missile strike on a 24-storey apartment building caused part of the structure to collapse, raising concerns that several residents may be trapped beneath the rubble, Klitschko said.
He added that a nine-storey apartment building was among several structures set ablaze by falling missile debris.
“In the Obolon district, cars are burning after being struck by falling missile debris,” Klitschko said. “There are also fires at two locations in open areas, including one near a kindergarten.”
Witnesses reported that thousands of residents sought shelter in Kyiv’s subway system early Tuesday, many carrying personal belongings and mattresses, as the sound of air defence systems responding to Russian attacks echoed across the city.
