KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran has claimed it carried out fresh attacks on United States military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, as well as strikes on two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, in retaliation for a renewed wave of US attacks on the country.
According to Al Jazeera, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched drone strikes early on Thursday against Bahrain’s Sheikh Isa Air Base and Kuwait’s Ali Al Salem and Ahmad Al-Jaber air bases.
The IRGC said Jordan’s Al-Azraq Air Base was also targeted with 12 ballistic missiles. It added that two oil tankers attempting to “illegally pass through” the Strait of Hormuz were struck as part of the operation.
Bahrain activated air raid sirens twice following the attacks, while Kuwait said its air defence systems were intercepting “hostile aerial targets”.
The IRGC said the strikes were carried out in response to what it described as repeated US violations of an April ceasefire agreement. It also declared the Strait of Hormuz “closed until further notice”, warning that any vessel attempting to transit the strategic waterway, including oil tankers and commercial ships, would be targeted.
The attacks came after the US Central Command announced renewed strikes on multiple targets inside Iran. The US military said the operations were conducted at the direction of President Donald Trump and were intended as a response to what it called Iran’s “unwarranted and continued aggression”.
