KABUL (Pajhwok): United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has said the key question is not whether artificial intelligence (AI) will transform the world, but whether that transformation will reduce inequalities or deepen them.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, China, on Friday, Guterres said AI represented a major opportunity for humanity but warned that poor management could widen the gap between developed and developing countries.
He stressed that AI should serve people, create more opportunities and contribute to achieving sustainable development for all.
Addressing the “Early Warnings for All” session on the sidelines of the conference, the UN chief said AI could help save lives by improving weather forecasting and early warning systems.
He called for vulnerable countries and communities facing climate-related risks to have access to effective early warning systems.
Guterres added that warning messages should be delivered through trusted channels and in languages understood by people at risk.
