MAIMANA (PAN) on Saturday, officials said.

The 13 metres wide and 2,000 metres long runway, costing $7 million, would be reconstructed over the next two months, the governor’s spokesman, Ahmad Javed Baidar, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Presently, only small aircraft can use the runway, which would be fit for all types of planes after its reconstruction, said the airport commander, Ghulam Sadiq Qadri. Traders and people from neighbouring Badghis and Jawzjan provinces will also benefit from the project.

“Our exports and imports are currently loaded and unloaded at Herat and Kandahar airports. With the reconstruction of the runway, cargo flights will take off from the Faryab airport, resolving our problems,” said a trader, Rahmatullah.

Additionally, passengers now travel from Maimana, the capital of the province, to Herat before flying to Kabul, he said.

Once the runway is completed, flights to Kabul, New Delhi and Mashhad will be operated, Qadri said.
