Takhar flood-hit victims get free land

KUNDUZ CITY (PAN):  The Afghan Natural Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) has started distributing residential plots to 1,350 flood-hit victims and vulnerable families in the northern province of Takhar.

The plots would be distributed to 200 affected families in the past spring in Khalyan area of Chah-i-Aab district and 1,150 others who suffered from the floods over the past six months in the same village, said Abdul Raziq Zinda, ANDMA provincial head.  

Zinda told Pajhwok Afghan News that six people were killed and 200 houses were destroyed in the calamity, forcing residents to take shelter in tents and broken homes.

“The land distribution process started a month ago in accordance with the 45th decree from the Presidential Palace in Sherazi town,” he said.

Meanwhile, governor’s spokesman Mustafa Rasuli said each family would receive 600 metre square of land and so far 300 families had benefitted.

The new housing area would have 200 shops, four markets, two schools, a mosque, a recreational park and other social amenities, he added.

“The government gave me the land and I spent 80,000 afghanis to construct my house. Two days ago I shifted to the new house from Khalyan,” said an excited 55-year-old resident, Aliullah.

Another villager, Hamza said he was very poor to construct a new house, so he had asked the welfare organisations to help.
