MAIDAN SHAHR (Pajhwok): The education director for central Maidan Wardak province on Sunday said his department was struggling with numerous problems due to funds shortage.
Fazl Rahman Tariq told Pajhwok Afghan News 172 schools across Wardak lacked buildings and that was why students were being taught in mosques, rented houses, orchards, tents and in the open.
He said there were 77 schools for girls, all operational, but in most areas, girls were barred from attending school. In such areas, girls were taught at home or mosques, he said.
Sometimes clashes between security forces and insurgents resulted in injuries to teachers and students and damages to school buildings, the education director said.
He called funds crunch another big problem facing the education sector, saying the two issues — funds shortage and clashes — had landed the education process in deep trouble.
He acknowledged that some schools were being monitored by Taliban insurgents, but said the issue had no impact on the education. He said only clashes between security forces and rebels were of a matter of great concern.
Education Ministry spokesman Kabir Haqmal said they had started constructing school buildings in provinces as per the plan.
He said resolving problems being faced by the education sector in Wardak was part of the ministry’s plan.
There are a total of 473 schools in Maidan Wardak and all of them are operational.
