Afghanistan, Turkmenistan sign 5 agreements

KABUL and Turkmenistan have signed three Memorandum of Understanding (MoU’s) and two agreements during the Turkmen president’s visit to Kabul on Thursday.

The MoUs included bilateral cooperation in anti-money laundering, improving relations in energy and sports while the agreements were signed in improving economic and trade relations.

After the agreements signing ceremony, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow attended a meeting in the presidential palace.

Ghani said that Turkmenistan was a good friend and neighbor of Afghanistan and both country had mutual economic and social interests and bilateral cooperation in regional peace and stability.

Calling Berdimuhamedow visit to Kabul of immense importance, Ghani said all neighbor states were committed in building peace, cooperation and peaceful coexistence on both sides of their shared border.

Ghani added that they also discussed cooperation in carpet trade, electricity import from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, and the plan of electricity supply, railroad and gas pipeline between two countries.

Berdimuhamedow said that they discussed measures to improve bilateral relations and that their meeting was productive in many ways.

He assured of his country’s continued support to Afghanistan on several issues, particularly in peace and stability.

He said that differences in Afghanistan should be resolved through legal channels such as United Nations or other international organizations. Berdimuhamedow said his country was ready to help Afghanistan to resolve its problem as a neutral country.

Turkmen president also stressed on joint cooperation in combating terrorism and narcotics.

He expressed gratitude for the friendly relations between the two countries and invited President Ghani to attend Turkmenistan’s 20^th Independence Day celebration.
