KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Taliban fighters on Tuesday evening forced their way into the Kandahar International Airport, triggering a clash with security personnel, but there is no report regarding casualties so far.
A group of Taliban opened fire on security personnel at the entrance to the airport at around 6pm before entering a building inside the airport, the governor’s spokesman, Samim Khpalwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The gunbattle was still ongoing as of 7:20pm, but information regarding casualties was not immediately available. There might be two or three attackers holed up in the building, the official believed.
Meanwhile, Taliban spokesmen Zabihullah Mujahid and Qari Yousaf Ahmadi asserted responsibly for the attack, saying a clash was going on between the attackers and security personnel.
Taj Mohammad, a passenger who just landed at the airport from India, said he was among several others trapped in the terminal. He said gunshots could be heard and army personnel were not allowing passengers to come out of the terminal.
