Heavy rain, flash floods forecast in several provinces over next 2 days

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Water and Energy has announced the possibility of heavy rainfall, flash floods, and rising river levels in several river basins across the country over the next two days.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry said that from May 10 to May 11, moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by flash floods is expected in the northern, Kabul and Panj-Amu river basins, as well as in some associated watersheds.

The statement added that there is a risk of flooding or rising water levels along rivers in Balkh, Samangan, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Kabul, Panjshir, Kapisa, Parwan, Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Nuristan, Badakhshan, Takhar, Kunduz, Baghlan and other related catchment areas.

Residents in the affected areas have been urged to avoid approaching riverbanks during floods or high water levels and to alert downstream communities in the event of flooding, in order to prevent human casualties.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, in a post on its X account, also warned of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and flash floods in the provinces of Badakhshan, Takhar, Kunduz, Samangan, Baghlan, Panjshir, Parwan, Kapisa, Laghman, Nangarhar, Nuristan, Kunar, Kabul, Maidan Wardak, Logar, Paktia, Khost, Bamyan, Daikundi, Ghor, Herat, Badghis, Sar-e-Pul, Faryab, Jawzjan, and Balkh.

The ministry said rainfall in different areas is expected to range between 10 and 30 millimeters.

It further added that relatively strong winds are also expected in northern, northeastern, western, southern, southeastern, eastern, and central provinces, with speeds ranging from 50 to 90 kilometers per hour in some areas.
