JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Eighteen Islamic State (IS) insurgents have been killed in fresh air raids by the Afghan Air forces (AAF) in the Achin district of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Tuesday.
Attaullah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News fighter jets pounded IS hideouts in different locations of Peshi locality late on Monday.
Anti-aircraft weapons of the group, also known as Daesh, were destroyed in the airstrikes, the official said, adding the weapons had been positioned on hilltops.
The fresh raids happened a one day after President Ashraf Ghani visited the province, where he vowed to eliminate the group. He said Daesh had no place in Afghanistan.
In Kabul, the Ministry of Defence said gunship helicopters struck IS positions, killing 18 fighters and destroying one heavy machinegun. Achin, an IS stronghold, has been the scene of heavy clashes since early 2015.
