KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): An Afghan Local Police (ALP) commander has been gunned down by unidentified gunmen in southern Kandahar province, a security official said on Monday.

The incident took place in the limits of the 4th police district in Arg area late on Sunday night, the official told Pajhwok Afghan News on the condition of anonymity.

He identified the ALP commander as Tor Jan, serving in Malang Karez area of Maiwand district. The commander, who recently reached the area, was shot dead by two unknown motorcyclists. The gunmen had managed to flee.

Targeted attacks on local officials and tribal leaders are a serious security threat in Kandahar.

Hundreds of people have been killed in such incidents in the past few years.
