UK envoy expresses concern over violence along Durand Line

KABUL (Pajhwok): The UK Special Envoy for Afghanistan has expressed concern over recent violence along the Durand Line, including Pakistani military attacks in eastern Kunar province.

The Pakistani military carried out attacks on Monday afternoon this week, targeting parts of central Kunar as well as the districts of Marawara, Dangam, and Sheltan.

The University of Sayyid Jamaluddin Afghan was also among the reported targets.

Reports say that as a result of the strikes, seven civilians were martyred and 75 others, including women and children, along with 30 students, were injured.

Meanwhile, Richard Lindsay, the UK Special Envoy for Afghanistan, said in a post on X that all necessary measures must be taken to protect civilians and prevent further escalation of the situation.

He called on both sides to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through dialogue, stating: “I also call for dialogue and restraint, including in meetings this week in Afghanistan.”

This comes after Lindsay told journalists in Kabul on Thursday that his visit to Afghanistan was “useful and productive,” adding that in meetings with Islamic Emirate officials he had stressed the need for Afghanistan and Pakistan to return to dialogue and diplomacy.

He said Afghanistan and Pakistan must take important steps to resolve their disputes.
