Most Uruzgan voter registration centres closed due to insecurity

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Fifty-three voter registration centres in central Uruzgan province have been closed due to insecurity, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) said on Tuesday.

Ahmad Shah Qanoni, head of the IEC’s provincial committee, told Pajhwok Afghan News only 12 out of total 65 voter registration centres had been active in the province.

“If the security situation improved we can open more registration centres,” he said.

Qanoni added over 11,000 people, including 1,000 women, have registered as voters in Uruzgan so far.

Mir Khan, the resident of Tirinkot, said most of the districts, including the provincial capital, have been sieged by the Taliban in the past two years.

“The government control only the central areas, people in rural areas have not been provided the facility to register their selves as voters,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Rahmat Shah Qemati, commander of the Uruzgan’s 4^th brigade, said the military had plans for improving security fpr voter registration centres in the province.

He said: “After the implementation of these plans, most of the security issues would be resolved and people would be able to register themselves as voters.”
