KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation (MoRR) says the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have arrived in Kabul to assess the living conditions of Afghans and address their challenges.
In a statement, the ministry said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Burham Salih and UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo arrived in Kabul on Sunday.
According to the statement, Deputy Minister of Refugees and Repatriation Mawlawi Abdul Rahman Rashid welcomed them at Kabul International Airport, saying the visit was an important opportunity to assess the situation of Afghans in the country.
He said the true picture of Afghan life could not be presented without close observation and direct engagement.
Rashid added that millions of Afghans have lived in migration for years but have maintained ties with their homeland despite all challenges.
He said assessing refugee conditions, listening to their problems, understanding their needs, and finding appropriate solutions are essential for preserving human dignity and improving their lives.
The statement quoted UN High Commissioner for Refugees Burham Salih as saying that the purpose of the visit was to directly assess the living conditions of Afghans and address their challenges.
He said around six million Afghans have returned to their country since 2023, describing it as one of the largest return movements globally.
He added that the United Nations remains committed to supporting Afghans and ensuring humanitarian assistance reaches those in need.
According to him, UN agencies operating in Afghanistan are working in health, humanitarian aid and livelihood support, and will continue efforts to create job opportunities.
The statement added that the visit reflects the international community’s support for Afghans facing economic and humanitarian challenges.
