Besides conferring on recent developments in Afghanistan, they also discussed the regional security environment, the Turkish Defense Ministry said.
"The two parties talked about Afghanistan and other regional defence and security issues and agreed to discuss them in detail during the NATO ministerial at the end of this month," the ministry added.
The phone conversation comes in the midst of a dispute between NATO members, the United States and Turkey over Ankara's decision to purchase a Russian air defence system.
The US has warned Turkey it would be excluded from the F-35 fighter jet programme and could face sanctions if it proceeds with the plan to buy the Russian S-400s.
